The Navy’s vessels are vital for Finland

The Finnish Navy will decommission a total of seven vessels and these need to be replaced. The Squadron 2020 project was launched to replace the vessels that are scheduled to be decommissioned.

As a vital part of naval defence, the new vessels will repel attacks from the sea and secure important assets at sea and in the archipelago.

The credible equipment and systems will establish deterrence against attacks.

Navy’s role in defending Finland

Naval defence must be capable of repelling attacks from the sea, countering territorial violations and safeguarding sea lines of communication. Control of the sea will be built in an area where it is needed. Mine-laying operations will be carried out and enemy vessels will be destroyed with surface-to-surface missiles.

What does Finland’s naval defence do?

repeals attacks from the sea
repels territorial violations
protects sea lines of communication
supports other authorities
takes part in crisis management and provides international assistance, based on a separate decision.

Squadron 2020 vessels to be constructed in Finland
While the vessels of the Squadron 2020 project are planned to be constructed in Finland the weapons and sensors will be procured from abroad.

Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC Oy and RMC Defence Oy) based in Rauma will construct the vessels for the Squadron 2020 project. The vessels will be built in 2022-2025. Read more about the project’s timeline!

These ships are almost size of Frigate but for political reasons they are called Corvette. The size is 3900 tons(displacement). Some politicians argue that they are too big for Finland. Ships will be used for international operations too. Corvette 600-3000 tons. Frigate 2500-6000 tons.
