Well his mother is from Marseille and his father from Grenoble and many Italians migrated to both areas in the 19th. It might be a possibility.

Because Germans look more Nordic than Brits do, which in theory at least could push them even further away from the French.

He looks like the average southern French?? That's a little far fetched. They are not that med looking. Excluding non-Euros many southern europeans have immigrated to this region of France including Italians, Portuguese, Spaniards, Armenian and Pieds-Noirs(alot have Iberian or Maltese ancestry) furthermore many Southern French primarily those in cities might have an Italian grandparent or half Sephardic Jewish. My half sister's father is from Southern France, he was half sephardic Jewish and half French. She took a DNA test and had 0% France and 42% Italian showed, 8% Portuguese and Spanish. None of those results were present in our mothers DNA test as her DNA was principally 38% British and Irish and 2% Germanic Europe and Sweden and my other sisters DNA results. Furthermore i have family that live near Grenoble in a small town next to the mountains and nobody looks that swarthy. Clavier isn't rare but to claim he is the average is a bit far fetched.
