I hate clowns BUT... I watched it and actually enjoyed it quite a lot.

Generally speaking, the film was a bit sad but twisted in a funny way and also very real. The back and forth switching between fantasy and reality, the references, especially the one to the famous 'are you talking to me scene', were hilarious.

The Mexican kids mistreating poor hard working Arthur were a great introduction and the first sign the film would be great, which, by the way, narrates the long degradation of a middle class man who lusts after a single black mother.. The peak of irony was the ending scene where the city proletarians would praise a psycho serial killer as their hero. Then I went on reading the Guardian's review thinking that they would destroy this film. They actually destroyed themselves. As a matter of fact, if you enjoyed it, probably you fall under the category of a latent racist. Happy days!

One thing I couldn't understand is how they made Robert De Niro, who is a bit of leftist, take a role in this film.

There was no left or right politics in the movie. That only began when the film was about to be released. De Niro probably was not even aware that the leftist media would take a hard stance against it. Also, Alec Baldwin signed up to be in the movie as well but he dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. There was no political bent.
