The Levant (Italian il Levante, "the eastern country", really "the sunrise", by levarsi, "rise"), was used in the past as a general term for all countries around the eastern Mediterranean beyond Italy, and included both the Balkan countries, Turkey and Egypt.

Probably that + I think also there is a larger proportion of southern Europeans in general because of the complicated history of these countries. Definitely a Finnish wouldn't ask itself if he is more southern-shifted, if he was some Levantine DNA or North African...
Southern Euro countries had been invaded and conquered by a lot of different peoples : Ottomans, Arabs (I include Levantine, North-Africans and Arab Peninsular), northern tribes, Normans, Romans, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Ancient Greeks...
This awakens the need of finding answers about these historical facts and the impact they had in the populations.
