Neaby Balkan states declared independence after 1900, Greece was a mature kingdom back then and for nearly 1 century

Well, Serbia had large autonomy in 1817. as result of victory in rebelion and finally gained full international recognition in 1878.

Montenegro even earlier had de facto independence.

IRL yes, as Balkan has negative connotations attached to it from the Romanian perspective. I don't mind it, as I think that culturally we share a lot, especially with Bulgarians.

But the question here is not if Romania or if any part of Romania is Balkan, but "when it is considered Balkan" are Romanians uncomfortable?"

I think it is a little too forward to label a Romanian Balkan on a first date but ok once you're in a committed relationship
