Modern Bulgarians are a Slavic people strongly similar to Serbs and other Balkan Slavic groups. Historical Bugars are another story. They had a khan, they were Tengrist, they were nomads, they had names like Omurtag, Kurum. It should sound familiar. Modern Bulgaria has identity issue like France. The French have German name and state origins, they speak Latin language coming from a Roman influence, however they physically descend from Celtic people. This is like Bulgarians who are historically Turkic but linguistically Polish yet physically not really from Slavic people.

There is no serious historian in the world who deals with this issue to back this up. There is no Bulgarian historian to claim this. The language spoken by the Bulgarians in Kubratova Bulgaria and then in the Danube Bulgaria until the admission of Christianity is unknown because there are no written documents that reach us through which we can confirm this.

Bulgarians are not Slavs, or the smallest component of their genetics is Slavic. Like any modern nation, Bulgarians are the product of a mix of different ethnicities and the Bulgarian identity has not changed for more than 1500 years. They were always called Bulgarians, and their country was always called Bulgaria no matter what geographic region it was. At least Roma or Byzantines / Pωμαίοι Muslims, nowadays called Turks, can speak of identity

Nobody knows what the old Bulgarians were. When DNA results from old Pro-Bulgarian samples come out and compare with other ancient Turkic and modern Turkic ones, then we can talk. To date, people involved in science-history relate more to the ancient peoples of the Caucasus. Speaking speculatively, it is more likely that the old Bulgarians were Indo-Iranian / Scythian or Sarmatian / or mixed with Turks.
