I work in a place that most every person on earth has heard of and is aware of the research and decisions that we put out; we are of grave importance to global healthcare and direct the way clinicians around the world guide their practices. Yet the vast majority of my co-workers (those who aren't the vice-president and presidents of the respective divisions) have several roommates in order to pay rent, or, alternatively, live in crappy neighborhoods an hour's commute (or more) away.

Yes everyone drives lamborghini. Don't mind the overpriced health care, high amount of hoods, homeless people and uncountable prescription pills for depression.

Real Estate Homes are creeping up in price. Not a lot of new construction over the past 8 years.
In the city most of the crappy hoods have been gentrified renovated over the past 20 years. Those hood rats
are now in the older suburban ring.

I'm not depressed. My prescription pills are purely recreational.

Really the American "Middle class" (movie) would be considered upper middle class here.

People who drive flashy cars and wear designer clothes and who are ostentatious with money tend to be nouveau-riche.

Bank staff often say they that when customers walk into banks, they can usually tell the genuinely wealthy people (who tend to dress down in jeans and sweatshirts, or in non-flashy clothing,) from the not so wealthy, (usually flashy people who've aquired a bit of short-term money.)

I see wealthy people who live in large and extremely expensive properties in my local area, and most of them dress conservatively, but not flashy or in an ostentatious manner. Others dress down in ordinary clothing when they're walking their dogs, or going to the local supermarket. The jewellery is often kept elegant and simple, but not ostentatious. They dress in normal clothing when they're jogging in the local area. Smart clothing to work, and elegant but refined clothing when dining in local restaurants.

My Irish friend knows an older English married couple who live in a millionaire home nor far from him in north London, and they regularly walk their dogs together. He said they always dress down in muddy wellies and country raincoats (nothing flashy,) politely smile and nod as they pass people, are quiet and keep to themselves. My Irish friend said to me that people wouldn't guess they're millionaires by looking at them. They're very cautious and sensible with money as they're not nouveau-riche. They like visiting art galleries at the weekends, but they're not big spenders despite having a lot of money. They invested in their adult childrens education, but they're not flashy about their wealth.

The nouveau-riche are the ones who tend to blow money fast, want to buy the flashiest clothes, big cars to show-off in, lots of jewellery, etc, and tend to be more materialistic.

There's a lot of wealthy Americans living in my local area who want people to walk their dogs, lock up their properties afterwards, etc, and I've noticed that most of them aren't flashy either. They also dress in smart, but conservative clothing... nothing that draws lots of attention.

I don't know if it's the same culture in the U.S.... celebs and the nouveau riche and attention seekers like to be noticed all the time, want to attract media attention, want to flaunt their newly aquired wealth, wear big diamond rings, etc, but business executives, people born into wealth, etc, are more discreet and sensible as they went to good schools and were raised with class and elegance.

I don't know what percentage of the total population of the U.S. are millionaires, but I suspect it's less than 10%.

I've just researched it;- millionaires in the U.S. are 6% of the total population: https://learningenglish.voanews.com/...-/4562023.html

The movies do not necessarily reflect the real world.
