In terms of anthropology and ethnography, the southern Russians are Russians from regions like Smolensk, Kursk, Ryazan or Tula. Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, Novorossiysk are not the territories of the formation of the Russian people. These territories were settled at a later time. Bunak surveyed all groups Russians, Northern Russian (Novgorod, Vologda, Arkhangelsk, etc) and Southern Russians (Tula, Smolensk, Kursk etc). In this study, there are no regions like Vologda or Arkhangelsk. I'd rather call this study as pigmentation of Russian players from the third League.

But Bunak study ended north of the Kursk - Saratov line. So Don Cossack, Rostov, Kuban, Volgograd, Astrachan, Stavropol regions weren't tested.

Right. Those territories were settled at a later time people from Ukraine and Southern Russia. Most likely there are much more ethnic Ukrainians than Russians there.

The Caucasus for Russians is the same as Australia or North America for the British. These lands were colonized by the Russians at a fairly late time. All the Russian population there are immigrants from other places. My family is from Vologda and it is one of the centers of the Russian nation. I have relatives in the Far East but they moved there only in Soviet times. Their roots are still in the Russian North. Some of them returned home after retirement.

The Guanche skulls as a whole are unlike those of modern European Mediterraneans, and resemble northern European series most closely, especially those in which a brachycephalic element is present, as in Burgundian and Alemanni series.
divided them into clearly differentiated types, which include a Mediterranean, a Nordic, a "Guanche," and an Alpine. The "Guanche" accounts for 50 per cent of the whole on the four islands of Teneriffe, Gomera, Gran Canaria, and Hierro; the Nordic for 31 per cent, the Mediterranean for 13 per cent, and the Alpine

Not all Southerners are ethnic Russians so the meme is still correct.

It comes as natural for East to be darkest since they had largest peaceful assimilation of local ethnics into Russian sphere. We, Kubanoids, had centuries long blood feuds with pretty much all non-Russians in the region so mixing was out of question for most. Only in post-war USSR things eased a bit. But just a bit.

Top part of it is almost purely Russian. But as you go down South and East it's mostly local ethnics.

Well there is still a belief that Southern Russians are darker than thoose of other parts. Also East is not so dark i guess, as i wasn't able to tell Mordvins, Chuvash and other christian minorities apart by name.

Of course you can't expect all Southerners to be as blonde as Finns. Most will be somewhere in the middle. Still there are whole extended families of fair pigmented people with more or less Scandinavish look. My relatives are examples of that. One may suspect it's rather recent influx but in my family all migrations into region had happened during times of Empire. Some were original Cossacks from Black sea host, some joined later. Now go try figure out what was their original pigmentation.
