We're not saved by Law; the Law is given as a curse (Galatians 3:10-14). Christians are saved by grace, by the unmerited favor of God. (Ephesians 1:3-6, 2:1-10). God's favor cannot be bought or earned by the will or works of man (Romans 9:15-16). Salvation is found only in Christ. So we are saved to do good works, not because of them.

So we owe Jesus absolutely everything. A Christian has been bought with a tremendous price and is no longer his own, but belongs wholly to the One Who bought him (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). So we are to serve God "[...] in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter" (Romans 7:6).
