Nope, you are wrong. Many american german adopted english names after WW2 because being german was not a good idea after Hitler in the USA, but their origin is not necessarily english just because they have english names.

British ancestry there is also distant, maybe they forgot about it, that's why many of them simply identify as "Americans".
And the USA fought against England in order to obtain their independence, one of the reasons why they don't identify as English-Americans, it would be considered unpatriotic.
