Nope, it's not that simple. As for Vietnam, North Vietnam only had to persist and sustain the war, until American sentiment understandably viewed the war with disdain, and demanded for an end to American involvement. The North Vietnamese and Vietcong did take heavier casualties in that war. The USA didn't concede defeat in that war; instead, they settled with North Vietnam for a peace agreement, from the Paris Peace Accords (1973). Soon after American military units withdrew (as per the signed agreement), North Vietnam violated the terms of the agreement, and the situation escalated into a full scale invasion of South Vietnam. Nixon had intended to send aid to South Vietnam, under those circumstance, but the Watergate Scandal seems to have paralyzed his administration, thus preventing it from providing additional support for his ally.
