The expression "dark ages" is refuted by historians, it's a very connoted expression that don't tell us that much upon this period (and by the way I was referring not only to the centuries after the fall of Rome but also the Late Middle Ages).
Well, the dark ages was mostly meant for the high middle ages, not the later period. The Italian Renaissance started in the later middle ages which gave rise to the European Renaissance as a whole. You Italians should be honored to be among the most bright minded peoples of Europe even to this way day.

I used "Middle Ages" as a whole, from the Fall of Rome to the Renaissance. I haven't precised in the precendent message.

That's what I said, lol. You're right. Syriac and even Christian Arabs from the Persian gulf and Southern Syria were invited by the scholars of Iraq to translate the books into Arabic which was the language of knowledge and science while Persian was the language of administration in the Abbasid period.

Some of these (Levantine and W.Asian christians, monks) fled also in S.Italy (including S.Calabria and Sicily).

Well, but the ones who end up transmitting the knowledge to the West were Muslims and Jews, not Christians.

I guess. In general, Baghdad during that time was the largest city in history that managed to outnumber Rome(the city in the 9th century AD was 1.25 million and between 1.2 to 2 million in 10th century AD).

Transmitting surely, not saving the books from a supposed destruction or loss. That what I said since the beginning.

Well, it make sense considering that Greek and Aramaic were the languages that the Christians used in the eastern part of the Roman empire(Byzantines), and the Muslim scholars had Christians to translate the books since they were familiar with the languages. The Nabateans and other Arabs who were Christians like the Ghassinids, Tanukhids, Salihids and etc knew how to read and write Greek back then:

There were also monasteries that keeped very old manuscripts like in Saint Catherine's Monastery in Sinai. The codex Sinaiticus which was used for some modern Bible traductions was rediscovered by the Bible scholar Tischendorf in the 19th century so that blow up completely the idea that it was muslims that saved the books from the destruction.
