very similar to Moldova tradition of mascați / "masked ones", on New Year's Eve, when they scare away the evil spirits but also have a traditional ritualic fight between themselves, sometimes becoming a real fight, rarely even with people dying - usually the local police is overseeing the ritual because of past events. I witnessed the ritual a couple of times in my childhood, in my mom's village, where it was wonderfully well preserved, and it was like a fairy tale, very ancestral feeling, goose bumps, they formed some sort of melody when walking around in a specific rhythm as to sound their body belts of bells as well, which sound very tribal.

the sound of the бухай (round wooden cylinder closed with sheepskin, through the middle of which you pull a horse hair and it sounds like a bull's roar) and the one of the зургълъй (the bells belt over the shoulder and chest) were awesome.
