Why is Serbia so much better at sports than their neighbours?

Serbia's Olympic record looks pathetic in comparison with Slovenia. Croatia is ofc much better. Out of these 3 we have most medals and largest number of Gold by far, but Slovenia has double smaller population than Croatia and almost 3X smaller than Serbia, and they are quite close to us. Serbia far behind.

If you count 1 team sport = 1 medal, in fact Serbs bring home 3x more medals than Croats

I would argue our silver and bronze medal in football World Cup are worth more than all your other medals put togheder, because football is by far most competitive sport.
In Volleyball you are powerhouse, we suck. In handball we are powerhouse, you suck. Both sports are small in comparison with football.

In basketball (global sport no.2) you are much better, ofcourse. But we had glory period too in the 90s.
In waterpolo, which is basically a regional sport, we are both top teams. Historically you are better, but not by much, and recently we have been closing the gap.

In individual sports we are lot better. You have one superstar in Đoković which none of neighbours have, but the rest are not on pair, neither with Croats nor with Slovenians.
