They will never wipe out the cartels because thats what keeps Mexico, well.. Mexico. Bunch of drug running latin mongrel scum. Losing that narrative of brown people across the southern border would be terrible.

Yeah the whole latin american region is a completely dumpster The U.S should just annexed those territories and make them U.S commonwealth territories like Puerto Rico

The cartels provides the drug supplies in almost the whole region, they flooding the USA too. I think that would be in everyones interest to wipe them out, like Iraki war style. This would not stop the crime, and drug spreading completely ofcourse, but damage them to the level they'd need several years to recover, and maybe it would be never the same like before... The problem is as you too know, the money. I don't wan't to go into wild conspiracies but there is a lot of money in drugs, and some people at the top have interests in it.

I would say it has nothing to do with us so we shouldn't get involved, but given that they're right on our border and often traffic drugs across said border, I would be fine with giving them, with their permission, some material aid and special ops forces or the like, preferably as part of a multilateral/UN aid mission.
