Is there a cognitive dissonance when nationalists or separatists like to use English?

When they come from non-English speaking countries, that is. I was thinking this when watching news reports of the demonstrations in Barcelona - the number of placards written in English was quite astonishing. The thing is that many Catalan nationalists complain that Castilian is an 'imperalist imposition', but how do they think English got spread around the world? (And before then, to Wales, Ireland and Scotland). It is indeed risible how at least some Catalan nationalists prefer to speak English rather than Castilian in the name of anti-imperialism!

To put it another way: I doubt even the most fervent supporter/member of Plaid Cymru or Sinn Fein would wave around placards in Spanish during a pro-independence demonstration.
