Why is Transylvania regarded as creepy?

I don't see it to be honest. I'm visiting sometime soon to see Rusyn ancestors village, so maybe I'll think about it differently when I'm there.

But seriously. Bram Stoker wrote Dracula, who was an ethnic Hungarian with a name taken from Vlad the Impaler and his Order of the Dragon. Béla Lugosi (Hungarian actor) played the first vampire Dracula in movies. This began the association from the west with Transylvania as "spooky". After Romania gained control over Transylvania they capitalized on this for tourism to Romania and still do. They also see Vlad the Impaler as a sort of national hero for fighting the Ottomans so the namesake of Dracula is something that some are proud of.

Transylvania is not spooky at all and is beautiful. Half of my family is from Transylvania and the other western Hungary. I suggest never buying into the western tourist trap or silly ideas of Transylvania or Hungarian vampires. Transylvania has a much richer history than western teen stereotypes from a British-written fictional character. Go and experience the local Hungarian culture for yourself and the warm hospitality we are known for. Dances, music and food and horseback riding events of Hungarian regions of Transylvania are a must.

Is Transylvania creepy? It might be a wrong perception from behind the Iron Curtain times blended with historical Hollywoodian perspective.

Because it's mainly associated with Dracula, Vampires and Werewolves. In reality though the region is regarded to be a very beautiful place in Romania. Romania honestly is an underrated country for tourism really.
