Do you know the particular sub-group your Rusyn ancestors are part of?

No, they moved to Zakarpattia at some point in early 20th century and that was that. They were so dark they got joke called Gypsies though (though def not real gypsies I retested DNA of a daughter of them.

It has certain vibe. Stears like to say the nature there is evil, in a beautiful way.
It's pretty wild place, full with wild animals like bears and wolves in the Carpathian forests.

We visited Lake Sant Anna, which is only volcanic lake in the region and bears are common sight, they often came up on the shores. I was very afraid to walk around.

Place is location of one Szekely legend.

Transylvania is very charismatic with fantastic medieval cities, castles and architecture, but it is also kind of rough, very mountanious, ''dark'' and climate can be quite harsh.
It is still very authentic and worth of visit for those searching ''old Europe''. Whoever is fan of Gothic architecture should visit the region, very few places in Europe can rival it when it comes to that.

For your average person I guess it's the cultural connection to Dracula and vampires (thanks to Bram Stoker).

False. Atleast the part of Transylvania i visited.

And to answer the answer why is it creepy. Good question. It's not that creepy at all. Very beautiful though. All just a tourist tactic.
