Hungary. More than 800 years of common state, common heroes, genetic closeness, friendly relations and mutual respect between the two trough most of history. And ofcourse, being married to a Hungarian.

After 800 years under the Hungarian rule northern Croatians use only a few dozens words of Hungarian origin. After 110 years of Venetian rule Dalmatians from hinterland use 200-300 words of Italians origin, Dalmatian from the coast and Islands after 400-500 years of Venetian rule use probably over 1000 borrowed Italians words (speeches of some Islands were heavy Italian influence, 100 years ago their vocabular was semi Italian).
I think regerdless of centuries of Hungarian rule on Croatians your people is not so familiar with Hungarians.

Croatians play closness with Hungarians and Germans. Still most of them are typical Balkanites, especially Dalmatian Vlaji, Lika Bunjevci, Herzegovinian and Bosnian so called Croatians.

I am Anglo-American or more specifically Anglo-Celtic, British Isles stock, etc. I feel closest to Anglo-Celtic peoples of the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

Next would be other Northwest Euros, though Francophone Northwestern Europe feels more alien than Germanic Northwestern Europe.
