The typical Anglo dinner is just meat (steak, chops, sausages) and vegetables. OK, it's not very interesting or especially flavoursome, but I've never understood why ethnics and Americans go on about it. And I prefer our desserts to other countries.

British cuisine falls in line with the rest of Northern Europe with its Holy Trinity of potatoes, veg and meat.

Paraphrasing the user (sp?)ChildOfMud; "British food is homey food, not fancy food". I agree with her and you both, it's funny to joke about national stereotypes and all, but it's not like British food is meant to be the apex of haute cuisine or anything, it's meant to be hassle-free and simple, I'm half Spanish but I still really enjoy my Hashbrowns, Scones, Yorkshire Puddings etc...

What do you mean? I'm pretty sure that's a typical dinner for most Americans too.

All you need in the world. It's the basic meals that make me feel best.

And that's what makes the best cuisine: not one created by a couple of chefs and a court with fanciful ideas who use haute cuisine (don't think that the average Austrian or Frenchman had more than dry bread and stale wine for his dinner when those recipes were created !) as a way to throw their affluence in the face in their subjects, but by the people themselves to eat well. The cuisine of North-Western Europe is one that is, essentially, a symbol of our democratic traditions. The Dutch would call it huismanskost or burgermanspot, the Swedes call it husmanskost: healthy honest food for a citizens' stomach.

    Agree 100%!

Simplicity does not always mean something is inherently of poor quality.

In Dutch we would have a derogatory term to describe haute cuisine: liflafjes. Just a heap of overtly expensive unnecessary nonsense that doesn't even fill your stomach.
