Catholics from Dalmatian hinterland, western Herzegovina, part of Lika Catholics, and most of Bačka "Serbo-Croatian" Catholic speakers are Bunjevci. Southeast of Vrlika (Sinj area, Imotski area, western Herzegovina) Bunjevac name disappeared long time ago, and these Catholics today claim that never existed (they forgot Bunjevac name). In Vrlika area, Drniš area, Bukovica and Ravni Kotari Bunjevac name existed until 100 years ago, and even today many Catholics from these areas say they have Bunjevac roots. In Bačka Bunjevac name among Catholics is preserved until today.

According to one theory Bunjevac name came from personal names Bunj, Bunilo, Bunislav or Buniša. Tribal lider of some medieval Dinaric vlach tribe had some of these names and his comunity got name Bunjevci.

Names Buniša and Bunislav are recorded among vlachs in St. Stephen Chrysobull of Serbian king Milutin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Stephen_Chrysobull

Only among Bačka Bunjevci is recorded legend about Buna river in large number. Among Dalmatian and Lika Bunjevci very few people mentioned Buna river. I'm calling on various researches from 19th century to recent time. Bunjevci are too numerous to all originated from mycro region as Buna river area. Some of them realy originated from Buna for sure.
I reccomend you this book about Bunjevci of Bunjevac Suzana Kujundžić Ostojić https://nardus.mpn.gov.rs/bitstream/...tacija4279.pdf

Chetnik commander Veselin Misita was "Bunjevac", because he is born in Buna https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veselin_Misita

Btw he is cousin of Vojislav Šešelj by maternal line.

Interesting is non-existence of surnames which are related with their name among Bunjevci (at least among Bačka ones).

Similar is with surname Crnogorac. Exist in various regions outside of Montenegro (mostly among Serbs), but not in Montenegro.

Letter of Bunjevci from Sombor to Pope Clement IX written on October 10, 1668 in Cyrillic. There is more ijekavian than ikavian words. Ijekavian - pripoviedali, niesu, živiet, ovie. Ikavian - namisniku, divoike.
