Probably working for the early semi-state company Administratie der Posterijen en Telegrafie (later:Staatsbedrijf der Posterijen en Telegrafie) like my father and grandfather. Maybe as a mailman, maybe working for the telegraphy service, maybe fixing cables. Probably mary somewhere early in the 1900s (I would have been born in 1882) and drafted in 1914 for the general mobilisation which would have meant four years of boredom. I very likely would have seen World War II and died somewhere in the 1960s, maybe early 70s.

For me, the Great War would probably be '14-'18 and, thankfully, this country would be neutral. It would mean being called up in my very early thirties and spending four years that I could have spent as a father of a family I certainly would have, in some fortress in the country's expansive fortification system or in the naval militia or God knows where: but it would have been four years of extreme boredom - interspersed with periods of tension with either the Allies or the Germans.

No, my ancestors were not survive, my great grandfather was raised as orphan after his family was murdered.
