Your ancestors survived, why wouldn't you. Maybe they were just the usual myth of Serbians suffering

Probably mary somewhere early in the 1900s (I would have been born in 1882) and drafted in 1914 for the general mobilisation which would have meant four years of boredom. I very likely would have seen World War II and died somewhere in the 1960s, maybe early 70s.

For me, the Great War would probably be '14-'18 and, thankfully, this country would be neutral. It would mean being called up in my very early thirties and spending four years that I could have spent as a father of a family I certainly would have, in some fortress in the country's expansive fortification system or in the naval militia or God knows where: but it would have been four years of extreme boredom - interspersed with periods of tension with either the Allies or the Germans.

"I present my arms. I love thee as much as I love my honour !"

But let's not forget who served:

'The National Militia mainly consists of gentlemen who are either married or engaged or who are "studying for either stage". (Meaning: A reminder to people that those who answer the call are still people who leave people behind).

"Start playing somewhere else ! Your war is not our problem !"

Wake up and smell the coffee.

No, my ancestors were not survive, my great grandfather was raised as orphan after his family was murdered.

Some videos about this event, when Austo Hungarians attacked Serbia (and made those crimes against civils) is here.
    Those were actually Croatian soldiers.

There is almost no house in Serbia that has not lost at least one member of the family in WW1.

Eventually, Serbia survived and liberated its northern part Vojvodina, and aggressor Austria-Hungary is dead.

In Chicago, would have been slaving away in a steel mill or factory. If lucky, perhaps working on the railroad.
