Architects Convert Old Dutch Church Into A Gorgeous Library

Dutch firm Molenaar & Bol & van Dillen Architects breathed new life into a 19th-century church
by turning the space into a vibrant library and community centre.

The renovation focused on retaining the original layout of the church, which dates back to 1884.

The result is a beautiful, wide-open interior converted into a breathtaking library with sliding bookshelves.

The multi-functional space also includes exhibition halls, meeting spaces, and a restaurant.

The architects kept the church’s original structural layout intact
and lined the massive interior with thousands of books.

The church’s original windows work in tandem with the added lighting to create a bright, well-lit space.

Bookworms can easily access the library’s inventory, which is kept on sliding bookshelves.

The shelves, installed on a rail system, can be moved when more space is needed
for a large event or to create private areas for smaller conferences or meetings.

To add more functional space to the interior,
the architects created an impressive 5,380 square-foot mezzanine level
lined with several study areas and meeting rooms.

This curvaceous feature continues through to the church‘s exterior,
where it forms the roof of four pavilions connected to the facade.

A restaurant was also installed in the garden pavilion on the south side of the building.

The 'DePetrus' library, museum, and community centre is located at Heuvel 2, 5261 EE Vught, Netherlands.

Ancient Dominican Church Renovated into Modern Bookstore

Whether you’re religious or not, this old Dominican church will certainly bring you the enlightenment you’ve been seeking.

After months of renovation this magnificent structure originally constructed in 1294
has opened its doors to the public as a “brand new” bookstore in the heart of Maastricht in the Netherlands.

A superb example of adaptive re-use, the Selexyz Dominicanen infuses rich and historic architecture
with plentiful shelves ripe with information.

Dating back to the 13th century, the structure was a Dominican church
until Maastricht was invaded by Napoleon in 1794 and the group was forced out of the country.

Since that point it has been briefly used as a parish, then a warehouse, then an archive,
then a giant parking lot for bicycles (not such a terrible idea) and finally made over into a bookstore.

Led by architecture firm Merkx + Girod, the new installations are highlighted by a towering,
three-storey black steel book stack stretching up to the stone vaults.

The highest shelves are reachable by lift or by a set of stairs within the sleek, well-made stack.

The views provided from the top shelf along the nave of the church are nothing short of uplifting.

At the back of the church customers and visitors can sit and admire
the beautifully renovated 14th century ceiling frescoes,
or chat over a cup of coffee in the café situated in the former choir.

In a bit of humour the bookstore also installed a cross-shaped reading table
where anyone can sit and flip through the magazines and newspapers
kept in the slats of the table.

So far the design has won the Lensvelt de Architect Interior Prize,
and in 2008 The Guardian called it the “best bookstore in the world”.

Selexyz Dominicanen belongs to the popular Selexyz chain
and maintains a wide selection of books across all subjects,
even boasting a sizeable collection of books in English.

As more and more churches are being abandoned due to redundancy,
maybe this is something for Barnes and Noble to think about…

    Gorgeous 15th-Century Church Renovated
as a Modern Bookstore in The Netherlands

This gorgeous 15th century Dominican church was renovated into a modern-day bookstore in the Dutch city of Zwolle.

    Utrecht-based BK. Architecten
    designed a 700-square-metre shopping area
on three added floors that can be removed in the future
    without damaging the existing building.

The modern stained glass windows, designed by Norwegian artist Kjell Nupen,
allow natural light to enter the interior and provide customers with a clear view of the entire area.

Two architects, Jos Burger and Wouter Keijzer of BK. Architecten,
in charge of the renovation of the old church
decided to preserve the atmosphere of the existing place
with a spatial intervention that preserves its historical value.

The three new floors were placed in the side wing of the church,
between the original pillars, outside the central ship.

The new construction is statically independent
and can be removed without having to demolish the building.

The architects used three colours and white for the plastering work,
keeping the main colour palette warm.

The main design tool when organising the space was to get customers to the top floor.

With this in mind they created a central staircase “wrapped” around an 11 metre bookcase.

For the furniture, the architects were inspired by intricately detailed pieces
their Dutch colleague Dom Hans van der Laan already designed for several monasteries.
