Default Germanicus: The Roman General Who Restored Honor To The Empire

Germanicus was perhaps the most popular general of the Roman Empire. His reputation among his soldiers and with the Roman public was unparalleled during his short life and increasingly after his death. He is remembered for restoring honor to the Roman Empire after the disastrous Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. The victories of Germanicus over Roman nemesis Arminius allowed him to be considered a hero to the empire. His legacy lived on after his passing, with his brother, son, and grandson all becoming emperor of Rome.

No one ever talks about how the battle(s) after Tuetonburg forest were much more bloodier, because they were motivated by revenge. This single event was a huge impact on German history.

    A true warrior.

Arminius was a backstabber and ironically, in the end he was backstabbed by his own men.

Everybody was stabbing everybody in the back. There were some really stupid Roman magistrates as well:

When Drusus brought Roman forces through Frisii lands in 12 BC and "won them over", he placed a moderate tax on them. However, a later Roman governor raised the requirements and exacted payment, at first decimating the herds of the Frisii, then confiscating their land, and finally taking wives and children into bondage. By AD 28 the Frisii had had enough. They hanged the Roman soldiers collecting the tax and forced the governor to flee to a Roman fort, which they then besieged. The propraetor of Germania Inferior, Lucius Apronius, raised the siege and attacked the Frisii, but was defeated at the Battle of Baduhenna Wood after suffering heavy losses. For whatever reason, the Romans did not seek revenge and the matter was closed. The prestige of the Frisii among the neighboring Germanic tribes was raised considerably.
Varus - the guy single-handedly responsible for the cock up in the Teutoburger Forest - also managed to ignore warnings (Segestes, one of the leaders of the Cherusci had warned him to stay clear from Arminius who he considered a real troublemaker (which was compounded by the fact that he was Arminius father-in-law against his will so he knew what who and what he was dealing with - and, yes, that man was ignored by the aforementioned Varus)) and actually use his troops in a very risky way that, basically, guaranteed the arse-kicking he received.

Agree that backstabbers are everywhere in war (Julius Caesar also got backstabbed badly) but Arminius was raised as Roman by Romans, trained in Roman art of war and served in Roman army. He used these techniques against the people who gave him everything. This is really a backstab with capitol B.

And the one man that warned against him was ignored. Varus was an idiot. A total idiot.

People generally take whatever opportunity they can, even if it's a little evil and dishonorable. Europeans especially (the ultimate opportunists and masters of exploitation), but you'll never see this in for example the Japanese Samurai because it's viewed as extremely cowardly.

Also, there was a Roman general named Aetius who was brought up with the Huns, and then used all he learned against them at this battle:

I personally would do the same, IMO.

I'm pretty sure Japan history has its backstabbers as well even if not Samurais.
