    Portuguese and Swahili are both spoken by more people as native languages than French is, and in multiple countries too. German is important in much of Europe even if not really elsewhere. The others are big national languages like Mandarin, which IMO should enjoy the same rights and recognition as the latter.

    I admit that having Chinese as an official UN language has more to do with the political power of China, but there are other things at work as well; French has been the"official" language of documentation (hence postal service and government documents throughout the world), and English is widely seen as a lingua franca (as a matter of fact, lingua franca...). They have to draw a line somewhere, I suppose.

    That is a separate debate altogether. What I am saying is that, insofar as we must have a global organisation for cooperation on essential matters, more of humanity's languages should be given proper recognition.
