And since the two languages are very close, yes, we can understand many things they say and write, but we need to be careful regarding the false cognates, for example

French power has declined massively over the last 100 years, while Russia would not be taken that seriously were it not for its nuclear weapons. Besides, Latin America is a lot wealthier than Francophone Africa, and probably wealthier than much of the old Soviet bloc too.
