I kind of agree with Spanish, but there are many more articles written in German than in Spanish on Wikipedia despite there being far fewer speakers of German worldwide.

The quality and longitude of the wikipedia articles in Spanish beats by far those of German.

Considering they actually have more native speakers than English and let alone French, it is extraordinary the number of international organisations that still don't have either of them as official languages: the WTO, IMF and IOC particularly come to mind. Nevertheless, I am interested as to what others have to say about this.

I don't see any reason to learn either Chinese or Spanish. Academically, one could make the case for French or German. There are many good sociological books in French and many good natural science books in German. Chinese and Spanish are a waste of time especially since Chinese is very hard to learn since they use their own weird pictorial non-latin script.

The vast number of native speakers of both (greater than English, in fact), plus the growing power and wealth of the countries where they are spoken (especially Chinese, of course). In addition, Spanish and Chinese are also the second and third-most spoken languages respectively in the US, being especially prominent in many of the country's big cities.

I think is easier for Portuguese speakers to understand spanish much more than us Hispanics understanding Portuguese.

Yes, Brazilians that live close to the border with Argentina or Uruguay, for example, tend to comunicate with our Hermanos in Portuñol, because they can't speak Spanish, so they mix both languages.
