The line between Amerindian and Mestizo is a cultural line. The point the previous poster(Duffmann) made was that Amerindians in the caste system were not at the bottom. The reason was that it was common for Amerindians to embrace the 'Mestizo identity' even if they look phenotypically Amerindian and some Amerindians married to into mestizo and white families and could easily become integrated. Look at the Toledo as the perfect example, he is fully integrated into the wider society and yet looks mostly Ameridian if he would adopt different clothes he could easily pass as full Ameridian in the eyes of some people. It would be 'Native culture' and not 'Phenotypically native-looking' people that is a the bottom.

Phenotype wise I guess, Amerindian features weren’t as discriminated against the way African features are and were back then. Actual Amerindian culture on the other hand is pretty much exists outside of the general Latin American society in a way, for example the Amerindian cultures were like small countries that lost territory to the European powers and once they were assimilated they took on to the Mestizo label which synchronized the Amerindian and Spanish traditions but this not the pure Amerindian society you’re talking about where Amerindian religion, language and food is the norm and part of the national identity with the Spanish one being non existing, if anything it’s the other way around in even places where Mestizos are clearly the majority genetically like Chile. Amerindians were not at the far bottom but on some level they weren’t as assimilated like African descendants who were forced to adopt a new identity separate from that of Africans from Africa to they’re new world culture which was born out of slavery and with nations what were developed. Amerindians were granted land that allowed to live a separate life away from Eurocentric society while the Africans while at the bottom were forced to live around the ports and major areas where they were enslaved.

You’re average Indio-mestizo(such as Peruvians) is similar to you’re average African American, Jamaican or Haitian while they may be genetically very Amerindian and African they’re very much assimilated to western society and they’re culture was founded from the clash of Amerindians and Europeans or the enslavement of Africans by Europeans. Amerindians are a bit more to tribal Africans in that they’re culture, language and traditions are still somewhat intact even if being influenced by European society
