They have germans surname via father and grandfather and gran grandfather... its how it works in Brazil.
The name of your mother grand father father your kids will not have and the surname of your grandmother via mother you dont even never had.
So surnames can desapear easily if they are not via father.
Also, there was a big aportuguesation of names in Brazil in all areas, mainly in South and Southeast Brazil where foreign names just turned to Lima, Rodrigues or Lins when they arrived. Even in Northeast in colonial dutch names became Holanda and other portuguese surnames like Vaz, Silva and Ximenes, Fontainelle became Fonteles and Fontenele, all french names turned to França and other portuguese names. Getúlio incentivated the integrarion around 1940 too mainly in South Brazil communities. Probably after 1950 people stopped to change their names.
For example, Samantha Schmutz have Swiss German via father and she is totally correct. Its part of her heritage.
While Malu Rodrigues lost her Swiss German via mother and use only her portuguese via father.

For italian-iberian mixes
Ana Maria Braga and Lilian Cabral use their portuguese via father. Their kids will probably not have any italian if the father dont have.
While Cristiane Torloni use her italian via father. Her kids would not have the iberian surname if the father is not iberian brazilian.
