People tend to forget that the Vikings were a race of traders, not simply as some barbaric brutes of Scandinavia. Ahmad ibn al-Fadlan was pretty much fascinated with them when he visited them in what is now Tatarstan, Russia when he went to the kingdom called Volga Bulgaria to assist with the Muslim king in the early 10th century AD.
