Yes but Southern European doesn’t mean not western, there is a west-east genetic axis, and a north-south genetic axis in Europe, and thus southern French people are more western then Sorbians in Germany

I'd never heard this Western-not-actually-meaning-Western thing until I came to this forum.

Both countries are Western European and define it, although you could say that France was more central to Western Civilisation and its creation after Rome, and it has no Eastern links unlike Germany. Germany however has defined Western civilisation to a greater extent than France in recent centuries.

I think France is more Western European. Germans have the eastern german thing going on, in movies often a eastern german is a villain. In the movie batman vs. superman the villain says "dad was from eastern germany". sometimes such small things appear, about eastern germans. it is only one sentence in the movie though. one short sentence but it does make him look more evil.

For example a Polish researcher of types of civilizations, Feliks Koneczny, wrote (in his book titled "Judaized Hitlerism") that the Third Reich was not an example of a Western type of civilization, but an example of a Jewish type of civilization implemented by Non-Jews (Germans in this case). Of course this may sound offensive to both Jews and Germans, but that's what he claimed.

Koneczny also considered Prussia (and the 1871-1918 Second Reich) as non-Western, but he considered it as an example of Byzantine style of civilization, rather than Jewish.

And Inter-War Poland under Joseph Piłsudski's semi-dictatorship was a Turanid type of civilization according to Koneczny, so he wasn't biased in a pro-Polish way either.

But he did consider the old Poland-Lithuania as Western.
I was thinking more of the scientific, technological and philosophical contribution of Germany in the last few centuries (including its Jewry). But yes, politically France was more Western than Germany until after WWII, and its Republicanism defined the West. So it's arguable I suppose.

With the exception of Balkan Slavs, or Southeastern Europe and Romania etc. I consider Southern Europe as Western Europe too. It is hard not to consider Italy or Spain as western Europe. Italy (Rome, Renaissance, Catholicism etc.)

If you wanna go by geography, then it's France, because Germany is more Central European and used to extend with East Prussia to the borders of Lithuania and once bordered the Russian Empire of course. Germany also used to have significant Polish minority in it's eastern lands and still has the Sorbs in the East.
