I'd like to try out whiskey. It makes me look badass while smoking a fat cuban cigar, lol.

I used to think the same before I started drinking a variety of brands, then you start to notice the differences between each one. My bro drinks whiskey for example (I don't) and I think they all taste the same at this point but he goes on about the subtle differences.

Portuguese wine is pretty good. Chile, Argentina and Uruguay have also good wines but I believe they export mostly the affordable ones to the international market and they might be not as good.

Vodka is nice every now and then, there are some nice cocktails you can make with it but I usually prefer to have my spirits plain and clean. On the right environment and context it can be a nice social beverage. In Poland and the Baltic states, in social gatherings at the table while sharing a meal we would do pure vodka shots and toasts in-between. Also at the saunas with beer (mostly in Estonia). That's probably the best way to enjoy the whole vodka experience.

Vodka is meant to be produced without a distinctive character taste, aroma or color. Flavoured vodkas are already a sub-category and do not follow the traditional recipe. It might be that premium vodkas are more distilled or use higher quality ingredients but I would say that people tend to pay based on perception. This happens too with other alcoholic beverages, there are as well extremely expensive whiskeys and wines that are not worth 1/3 of what they cost.
Whisky is an acquired taste that takes some time and patience. I think we can all agree that the first time most people try alcohol they don't enjoy it. However, unlike Vodka, great Whisky is meant to have an aroma and tasting notes (orange, cinnamon, coffee, tobacco, vanilla, etc).

This guy explains well how you could learn to enjoy it (just don't be as pretentious, lol).

It's all marketing and bullshiting, basicly only way you can fuck up vodka is by bad purification, so just don't drink anything that costs less than 5$/0.5 liter. Above that there is very small difference in quality. Single best thing you can do to a Vodka is to freeze it.
