    My favourite is how New York was originally Nieuw Amsterdam. For a relatively small nation, the Dutch did spread themselves around the world to a remarkable degree. (Kind of like the Irish but with more guns. )

    Meh. It would be a bad real estate deal now: NYC, as a city, is close to bankruptcy and we'd have a ton of people to provide welfare for. One Amsterdam (which is pretty the same as New York in that respect) is enough.

    Amsterdam and New York are not entirely alike: more people speak fluent English in the former than in many areas of the latter.
