The Midwest is the least English part of the USA, as well as New York and New Jersey.

That’s interesting. It seems like a lot of people in Canada, 32%, identify as “Canadian” - most likely old British Isles and French colonials, especially for those in Ontario and Quebec who identified as such.

Yeah most of "Canadians" in Ontario are probably British (but not just English, surely Scots are very numerous too) and most of "Canadians" in Quebec are French. In Quebec 76.2% (6,219,665 people) reported French as "mother tongue".

Outside of Quebec more people report having French ancestry than French mother tongue.

Even if not counting Quebec all other Canadian provinces except BC, Newfoundland-Labrador and Nunavut have over 10% people with French ancestry, and some have 20-30% (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island). Nova Scotia also has around 20%.

In the U.S. Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Louisiana, Rhode Island have >20% French.

Also Massachusetts and Connecticut have over 10% French.

Most English Americans, since 1980, put 'American' down on the census--that is what happened.

Still the increase of "American" does not fully explain the decline of "English", because "English" declined more than "American" increased.

But there are people who do not report their ancestry at all (just leave the field blank) and maybe this includes many English-Americans.

I would suppose English since I don't think the US census has a 'British' category due to a little thing you might have heard of called the American Revolutionary war. It is true, though, that many Americans are ignorant and think only the English are British

BTW, here data about French ancestry: https://www.theapricity.com/forum/sh...Canada-amp-USA
You might be right but I do not have time to do the math right now but you bringing up the French in an English thread makes you look biased perhaps.
