My maternal side is English with some Welsh and Scottish. They started in Massachusetts but then fanned out to New York and New Jersey later. On the English side of that side, one family was Huguenot from France, they fled to the Netherlands, and then on to England where they came to what is now America in 1620. Their surname was Romaine (cf. Romijn) but it originally was Il Romano, in the 13th century, a man from a small town in Italy, had studied in Rome and had earned the title Il Romano, "the Roman" as was the custom of the time.
