Today we read and comment on the Feriale Duranum, the calendar of religious festivities officiated in the Roman army in 225 AD, found in Dura Europos and relating to the Cohors XX Palyrenorum, a document of extraordinary importance for our understanding of the Roman military religion and esprit de corps. In the video we talk about the various cults and rituals established in the army, honoring gods, deified emperors, the genii and members of the imperial family, dwelling on the value that these practices had as a spiritual glue for the Roman armed forces. Among other things we discuss the importance of the patrician triad, Juppiter Optimus Maximus, Mars Pater, Victor and Ultor and the Quirites, ie the Roman freemen, analyzing their relationship with Roman society and identifying the truest and deepest meaning of the Empire, in an eminently religious-military sense.
