Edogan politics gave the like of Geert Wilder, Marie Le PEn and other 'Freedom Parties' in Europe the chance to portray Turkey as unfit EU membership. European xenophobia does a role, but Turkey solved its Kurdish problem, focus more on its economy (which the AKP did well in the 2000s before Erdogan foreign adventures) and less Islamist retrorics then there could have a chance Turkey could be in some EU agreement, if not part of the Eu proper. But as I said, Erdogan burned to many bridges.

It has nothing to do with Neo-Ottomanism. Turkey has proposed to fight ISIS alone without the PKK terrorist group even send their soldiers to the frontline and said we don't need another terrorist group to fight ISIS. But our European allies insisted on fighting ISIS by using YPG/PKK and never thought a second about their ally Turkey's border security.

He had to stand against our allies support for all kind of terrorists like FETO, PKK, YPG etc. And we don't want partial membership which is absurd. EU didn't let Bosnia to be a member either.

DarkSecret unironically thinks that Turkey's accession to EU under Erdoğan's leadership is a possibility.

Because Bosnia is too underdeveloped, too many ethnic feuds and does not have the complex political apparatus to be suitable for EU membership. The same reason why Croatia was likely to be a candidate in the 2013 enlargement of the EU than Serbia despite appeals, which is more political unstable and anti-western.
