The US along the British have been propping up theocratic Gulf states and conservative Islamic opposition groups from 1950s and 1960s Indonesia and Malaysia (Suharto, Malay Emergency etc which resulted in the deaths of millions of 'atheists and particularly ethnic Chinese') to the 1970s Arab emirates straggle against Marxist groups in the Arabian peninsula and MENA (funding Islamist monarchies to fight in Oman against 'leftists', support North Yemen against the Soviet aligned Secular South Yemen, Funding religious organisations to combat the allures of secular Baathist ideology in the Levant and Egypt etc) to 1980s Afghanistan (we all were that up ended in).
