Of course slang has its place in popular culture and will always be popular lingo , but I think it's pitiful if one's vocabulary is limited to and relegated to only knowing slang. I saw a news article a few years ago about a student who failed his English exam after he used phone text and limited character Twitter lingo, (e.g;- 'how R U 2day M8?',) and because he used a load of slang whilst writing his English essay. (E.g; 'Oi, guv...I'm on the dog and bone...' and whatever else they say in Cockney slang.)
Here's some proper English:
It's like someone claiming, 'I've learned German' - but only knowing German slang: https://www.fluentin3months.com/german-slang/Chuka Umunna is a politician and former MP who was born in London, England. His father, Bennett, of the Nigerian Igbo ethnic group and owner of an import-export business, died in a road accident in Nigeria in 1992. Umunna's mother, Patricia Milmo, a solicitor, is of English-Irish background.
Umunna's maternal grandparents were Joan Frances (Morley) and Sir Helenus Milmo QC, a High Court judge.
He is married to Alice Sullivan, an English employment lawyer. The couple have a daughter, born in 2017.
Umunna was educated at the boys' independent senior private school St Dunstan's College, where he played the cello.
During this period he was also a chorister at Southwark Cathedral.
He was awarded an upper second class LLB in English and French Law from the University of Manchester; after graduating he studied for one term at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, before studying for an MA at Nottingham Trent.
My sister speaks fluent High German by the way and learnt both Latin and German after academically earning her place in a Grammar School for intelligent pupils. Her German was good enough for her to live and work abroad for several years.
