Two Princes in the Tower by Sir John Everett Millais. The two children are believed to have been murdered by their uncle (the King) in real life, so that they wouldn't take his place on the throne.

The boys father was the previous King, but he died and his sons were too young to become heirs to the throne. So their uncle took over as the new King... but he knew as soon as the young princes were old enough, they'd take the place of King.

So he had the young boys locked inside the Tower of London... and they vanished forever.

The skeletons of two young boys were discovered 200 years later underneath a spiral staircase in the 1000 year old fortress of the allegedly haunted Tower of London. The bones were removed and interred in Westminster Abbey (the resting place of English Kings and Queens for 1000 years.)
