That's because most of the time if not ALL time Mexico is compared with U.S in GDP and human development and that's unfair.
IF that's the case then half of the world are completely shitholes failed states AS WELL . A truly failed state is Venezuela Moldova Zimbabwe etc..

Moldova? Anyway, I posted this to get to know what the opinions are TA on the current state of mexico. I don't Mexico is a failed state, considering I came back from there well and alive in resort towns in the Yucatan and Mexico city. But there so much paranoia by fellow America tourist about what regions to visit and where to avoid. Its sad, Mexico so much potential, large landmass, resources, historic sites dating to the neolithic, many factories etc. But I think the drug war is going to get worse, and the US might intervene.

Yeah that's the main problem with Mexico the drugwar as someone who has dual citizenship both U.S and Mexican sometimes my opinions are neutral BUT Mexico could easily clean itself if it really wanted to like for example legalised all drug substances and that would put the cartel out business but it wont happen why? Because AMLO head would be chopped off if he do that.
I read somewhere that AMLO really wanted to bring U.S army by Donald trump just like it happened in Colombia 1990s but it wont happen why? Same reason aboved.

Mexico is a shithole. Mainly because the geography condemns it. We should expect it to be shitty. It would be weird if it was otherwise. What's a miracle is that it hasn't broken up further and that there is a real potential for it to become less shitty in the near future. FDI has been a great boom. It's getting more regular electricity. The cartels are something like 1/3rd of Mexico's entire economy, that makes sense after NAFTA wrecked it's protectionist policies. It's a shitty fucking country but its one of those few shitty countries with an actual potential to become a decent country. It's like the Botswana of Latin America.

Their economy has been shit from the beginning. Do you see a long series of economic industrial cores connected by rivers? Is the climate agreeable to productive farming? Or is it desert, mountains, and jungle with a few isolated pockets of productivity with no means of connecting to each other except by overland routes? Did they develop a strong diverse market after independence? Nope. Silver mines and simplistic resource extraction. Which in turn creates perverse systems of infrastructure and education. And that was before it found oil, they aren't the ones creating economic conditions to bring in extremely cheap labour.
