Personally I would go with classical music.
Classical music (I'm not talking only about the Classical era which spans from 1770 to 1820) is the synthesis of hundreds of years of musical innovations, influences from various cultural and historical eras and ultimately thousands of illustrious composers.
The complexity and the diversity of the classical music can't be matched by any other kind of genre certainly not modern but neither folklorical or regional music (like asiatic or african music).
The highness reached by pieces like the 3th Symphony of Beethoven Eroica is still something to be matched.
Operas can be either historical, poetical, mythical, Wagner has created long-lasting operatic pieces that can take 3 entire days to be performed.
Closer to us, Debussy and many others wrote profound and onirical pieces :
