I'm just surprised that, both in relative and real terms, many more Greeks have gone to Australia than to the US and Canada, that's all.

Similar climate and Greek community already in Australia is a big sell point for Greeks in Greece. Not to mention Thessaloniki and Melbourne are sister cities which makes it even more enticing and a big selling point.

I refer to your stupid comparison between Greece and Portugal. Portugal is quite richer than Greece in terms of infrastructures, education, economic growth, health, etc

Some stats I've read show average salaries to be possibly even lower in Portugal than Greece, even though unemployment is not as high.

Salaries for sure are similar but much many things have to be considered. You asked yourself why Greeks would go to Portugal. Well, I gave an answer. Quality of life is much better.

In infrastructure and education, no. In the rest, yes. And despite the fact we were fucked due to the crisis, we still have the same income as Portugal. And before the crisis, we were richer than both Spain and Portugal.

Most Greek migrants in Europe tend to keep ties with Greece and eventually migrate back. Some intermix and stay in Europe. The Greeks in North America and Australia become Americans, Canadians and Australians after one or two generations.
