It can't be pointed to one source, I would say the Western influence from northern Celts during the iron age, shared ancestry going back to the IE migrations, "convergent evolution", Norse influence in the middle ages, German settlers in the early modern era are all relevant factors IMO.

Its due to IndoEuropean (EHG) ancestry not because mixing with nords. Russians barely mixed with anybody until the USSR
