Karachun is the lord of frost, snow storms and blizzards. It is a force of nature, which shortens the day and lengthens the night. In Ukraine, December 21 (winter solstice) is still called the “Day of Karachun”.

Karachun does not like those who shiver and complain about the cold. He grants health and rosy cheeks to cheerful people. In the fairy tale “Morozko” Nastyenka received gifts of gold and a warm coat for her patience, and capricious Marfusha returned home on a sleigh pulled by pigs.

In order to blandish Karachun the Slavs were feeding him oat kissel and porridge. They literally placed a dish on the threshold and invited Frost to try it. Nowadays Grandfather Frost is a favorite winter guest and he is highly anticipated.
