Not just that: the French and Italians also have fantastic motorways. So do the Spanish. The Germans are falling somewhat behind in that department.

Still smaller than the USA by quite some margin so it would be easier to maintain those roads. Also, nowhere near the number of motorists in those countries than in the USA. We have highways here that stretch coast to coast where you can fit about a thousand Hollands in between! I'd say we are doing alright, all things considered.

But how many of these highways are well-used and can be tolled (handed over to private companies like they do in France) and how many should just be downgraded to state roads because no one ever uses them ?

Traffic is already miserable out here in LA for example. Some freeways do have express lanes where you can use if you have a membership or simply pay a one-time fee for each use. Either way, construction and maintenance of roads out here is a nightmare and would spell more traffic to an already traffic-heavy city. What LA needs to do is to drastically improve our public transporation sector to at least match that of NY because too many damn people, even young teens drive their own damn cars out here! I wouldn't be surprised if there are as many cars as their are people in the LA metropolitan area.

I'm not too sure about the sparsely populated areas but I imagine outside of main interstate freeways, those roads don't need much maintenance as they aren't being used at the same rate as those in big cities of course. Either way, we got some shit to sort out to improve transportation out here. In a way, you should be blessed you live in a country that's barely bigger than Armenia. You don't have as much shit to worry about lol. Imagine what Russia has to say about their damn roads

"Russian roads" - that's a meme in itself. In America, the bottoms fall out. In Russia, the roads don't even have bottoms. What you'd see in the Netherlands, is that we are actually decommissioning some rural motorways (mainly in the East) and turning them over to the provinces (provinciale weg - basically like a state road) but the West is fully covered (as can be seen here).. although not nearly as much as was originally intended. The 1968 plan actually more bypasses around cities (a second one around Rotterdam) and a mayor arterial highway to connect the Belgian border (and Antwerp) and the far North of the country (the A16 motorway). Only its Southern leg exists now which means trouble around Rotterdam because all that traffic now has to go North using two narrower motorways (until the early 2010s: just one - the A13).
