I've heard the timeline has confused some people because they made it obvious only few episodes into the season:
"The timeline in the series is not linear. They are telling multiple stories throughout multiple books at one time. The timeline is continuously jumping from past to present. You are seeing the past and the present occuring at one time, and then in the end of season 1 they are all converging together. I can see how this could be confusing at first, because it can be kind of hard to follow if you haven't read the books or played the game. However, the ending of season 1 ties everything up perfectly, it is a perfect loop, which brings everything together, and makes the whole series make sense. Hence why the first episode is called The End's Beginning":
