France bars 24-million-euro Cimabue painting discovered in elderly woman's kitchen from being sold to overseas buyer
Dec 26, 2019
The French government has temporarily banned the export of an early Renaissance artwork which sold for 24 million euros ($39 million), in the hopes it can raise enough money to buy the painting for the Louvre.
The 13th-century artwork from Florentine master Cimabue was discovered hanging in the home of an elderly woman in the French town of Compiegne, directly above a hotplate she used for cooking.
Art experts valued the piece at 4 to 6 million euros, but it sold for nearly five times that estimate, fetching 24 million euros from an anonymous buyer.
