Default Strabo Describes Ancient Ireland and Thule: Edge of the Known World (Strabo's Geographica- 7BC)

Here we have the Greek and likely Roman Citizen Strabo describing the edge of the world as Rome knew it in the first century, the windswept island of Ierne - and even further than that, the legendary island of Thule. Surrounded by a 'sea-lung', an impenetrable mix of solid and liquid, Thule and "Ultima Thule" later became synonymous with the furthest point north on the map.

I'm done talking shit about the Irish but the Roman view is probably closer to the truth than the American view. Maybe, like 3 Americans read history in depth LOL. Americans tend to think Ireland is WAY more important than it is when it is just a little old island that has not played a big role in history. For instance, Ireland was regarded as a backwards backwater by the British for centuries and Ireland was not involved in WWII. The fact that Ireland was not involved in such a world war just underscores its insignificance.

Even though Ireland was neutral it didn't stop Irishmen volunteering in the thousands to fight. Irish are nothing if not brave.

My own father was in the RAF. Was your father in the services?

Why did you bring up the subject then? My family have had a long history of military service despite the fact that they were Irish.

Why would we get involved in a brother war that had nothing to do with us?

so ireland currently doesn't have a big population. same with lots of countries in europe. so what?

what is interesting is that in 1841 Ireland population was almost 8.5 million, while at that time england, scotland and wales together were 18.5 million.

Switzerland's population at that time was about 2.2 million.
