except I guess early Portuguese would be strictly Catholic and be speaking Portuguese instead - probably would have been forced to forge close ties with Brazil.
Brasil has also these characteristics, low population density and huge resources, and It is a third world country.

The quality of the population that inhabitates a country is far more important that resources.

If you met both, many resources per capita and a big high-quality population, you get a superpower like the USA.

Nope! AUS 24 million, Brazil 210 million the size is similar. (Brazil has population surplus in the southeast and northeast) Half of our territory is covered by tropical rainforest.

USA has more natural resources than Brazil

And skin cancer rates would be lower, since Spaniards, being mainly Meds, are less sensitive to the sun compared to Brits.

There would be still a high rate of skin cancer (probably not as high as Anglo Australians, but still high). A huge percentage of ethnic Iberians are skin type II and III, which can burn and can get skin cancer if not properly protected from the sun.

Hum... I wonder if Australia would have lived under a military ditactorship, which was common among Spanish colonies in the New World: Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Chile...

hmm... very likely. Either if it would have been colonized by Spaniards or Portuguese. Brazil also lived under a military dictatorship.

If the Spaniards colonizers had the same mentality and racial attitudes of the Anglos, Down Under would probably be the most Spanish country in the New World.

I say that because Australia is probably the most Anglo Saxon country outside Britain, compared to the USA their Euro stock is more homogeneously British and with a significant smaller Continental Euro imput.

Australians would look mainly Spaniards, and their accent, compared to other former Spanish colonies, would sound more like the motherland's.

Well, even not being like the British but having their own mentality, Australia and NZ would be overwhelmly Spanish racially speaking, similar to Uruguay. Keep in mind that Australia and NZ were very sparsely populated by Australian Aboriginals and Maoris respectively. And those lands didn't have crops that required the massive import of African slaves, aside that they are too far away from Africa. Like the British, Spaniards or Portuguese would have colonized mostly the southern temperate parts of Australia. They might have imported some labor from south eastern Asia and Oceania, but I'm sure the resulting mestizaje would have been predominately Iberian, and then millions of Iberians would have immigrated to these southern temperate countries after their independence, as they did to the southern cone. The resulting population would be mostly Spanish (or Portuguese if they were colonized by Portuguese), with some level of SE Asian mixture in the mixed individuals, but also millions of full Iberians or heavily Iberians with very minor SE Asian, Maori (in New Zealand) or whatever.

PS: remember that the thread is about how Australia and NZ would be if they were colonized by Portuguese.

And yeah, I agree that if these two countries were colonized by Spaniards they would have an accent more similar to the Spanish spoken in Spain, in the same way that the Australian English accent is more similar to the English in British Islands than the English accent from US, hahaha
